Well, it’s back on the TV once more. Upstairs Downstairs returned to our screens last night with a bang- well several actually courtesy of Mr Armanjit. Has much changed since series one? Well, there have been a couple of new arrivals: Beryl Ballard, the new house maid/ child carer, and a new daughter for Lady Agnes and Lord Hallam. If you were eagle-eyed enough, you may have also spotted another couple of new arrivals since the programme was last aired. Yes, 165 Eaton Place has now got itself a couple of chesterfield sofas. We don’t know whether any of you have managed to catch any of the eighth and final series of the BBC drama, Hustle? If you haven’t, then you’ve been missing out. No-one would claim it’s a cutting- edge drama, mind you: it’s probably better described as a little light Friday night entertainment. It’s not particularly challenging or thought provoking, bit it’s harmless fun none the less. Well, whatever your opinion might be, we have to confess that we’ve got a bit of a soft spot for Mickey, Albert, Ash, Sean and Emma. Why, you might ask? You might have noticed that the BBC has been busy rebranding itself over the last few months. It was told it needed to adapt and move with the times. First came the heavily publicised move to the frozen North with the unveiling of the state-of-the-art facility at media City UK in Salford: then came the rebranding of its website. Well the new site was officially unveiled last week. Not only did the news and sports departments get a makeover: all of its radio stations did too. Whether you’re a lover or a hater of television, one thing you can’t fail to have noticed is that once TV Executives cotton on to a popular trend, they’ll run with it and squeeze every last ounce out of it until the viewing public gets bored. TV revenue is wholly dependent on ratings, so if a genre works, they’ll do it to death. Nowhere is this more obvious than cookery programmes: we’ve had Floyd, Rick Stein, Jamie, Gordon Ramsey, The Hairy Bikers, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and dear old Delia. Continue reading →

To some people pets are a lifeline: to others a friend and companion. For some people though, their love of their pets goes much further than that. For these people, pets aren’t just a member of the family: they’re actually the most important member of the family. What has a chesterfield sofa and a McLaren MP4-12C or a Ferrari 458 Italia got in common? Well, it certainly isn’t price, that’s for sure. For the price of one supercar, you could probably buy well over 100 craftsman made chesterfield settees. Well the answer is that both featured in last week’s 2012 Performance Car Show at the NEC in Birmingham. Chesterfield sofa’s festive fare

What have Harry Potter, Great Expectations, the Borrowers and the Bank Job got in common? Well, obviously they were all on the TV over the festive period, but they also share another common feature: they all featured chesterfield sofas. In the case of Hogwarts it wasn’t just the one either: the Gryffindor common room had 4 traditional leather chesterfield sofas as far as we could see. You could also throw into the mix Notting Hill, Absolutely Fabulous, Elf, Come Dine with Me and the Queen’s Christmas address for good measure. Every one of these programmes featured a variety of traditional chesterfield sofas, leather chesterfield settees or chesterfield-inspired furniture. All in all it was a pretty good festive period all round for the classic English furniture icon. Chesterfield sofas are all the rage at the moment it seems, and let’s face it, if it’s good enough for the Palace or Hogwarts, then it must surely be good enough for the rest of us. They always say that good things come in twos, don’t they? Well, this week’s TV didn’t disappoint. Mind you, the TV didn’t serve up the sort of traditional fare that we’ve come to expect at this festive time of year. So, no turtle doves or a sniff of a partridge in a pear tree then. What we did get in its place was some riveting TV and a couple of chesterfield sofas. Obviously that’s the perfect festive gift as far as we’re concerned: a traditional Christmas served up on a traditional Chesterfield sofa.

Chesterfield sofas consider yourself at home

It’s amazing what a lot of fuss an advert can create, isn’t it? Some people simply see an advert: others see something sinister and malevolent, which is full of subliminal and symbolic messages. So, what’s the advert is question? Well, it’s the BBC Christmas ‘Consider yourself at home’ advertisement, featuring a host of television stars, and a grand piano and a traditional chesterfield sofa. The aim of the advert presumably, is to draw attention to the Christmas scheduling and emphasise the homely, all-inclusive feel of the BBC family. Chesterfield sofas and the space time continuum

If you think about science fiction films and screen plays, what thoughts and images immediately spring to mind? We’d hazard a guess at time travel, the space/time continuum and possibly super powers. We’d probably also throw unfathomable plots and suspended belief into the mix too. What you probably wouldn’t imagine are chesterfield sofas. After all, why would you? What’s a traditional Chesterfield sofa got to do time travel or parallel universes? Well, probably more than you might at first think, judging by a couple of films on the TV over the weekend, and past experience. Granted a couple of the films made no sense and left us baffled and confused, but we can at least take comfort from the fact that whilst directors and writers may have a skewed view on what the future holds for us all, they still see a place for Chesterfield Furniture. That for us isn’t all that surprising as we’ve always believed these classic pieces of furniture have longevity. Continue reading →
